Lula da Silva prepares his grandson to prove his innocence of corruption "in paradise"


Former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who is serving a 12-year sentence for corruption, has reaffirmed his innocence during the funeral of his 7-year-old grandson, saying he will prove he made no mistake when they meet "in paradise."
The former president's press office said Arthur Lula's grandson, who died of meningitis last week, had been bullied in school after his grandfather was arrested on charges of accepting bribes from a construction company while in power.

On Friday, Judge Lula da Silva was granted the right to leave the prison in the southern Brazilian town of Cordoba to attend the funeral of his grandson in a suburb of Sao Paulo, Reuters reported.

Lula was president of Brazil from 2003 to 2011 and was among Brazil's most popular presidents in power, but his image has been tarnished among many sectors of the population after being named in several corruption investigations.

Lula has strongly denied all charges against him and described them as part of a judicial coup.
