Pyongyang "illustrates the picture" after the failure of the historic summit

North Korea and North Korea have agreed to continue their "fruitful consultations on nuclear disarmament," North Korea's North Korean news agency reported Friday morning, following the failure of the second summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
Kim and Trump "agreed to continue their fruitful consultations on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the strengthening of US-North Korean relations," the agency said, without mentioning the end of the summit without reaching an agreement.

The second summit between Trump and Kim ended Thursday in Hanoi. The US president attributed the failure to the North Korean leader's demands for lifting sanctions against Pyongyang.

The aim of the summit was to define a clearer content of the commitments made at the first historic summit between the two men in Singapore last June when they signed a joint declaration on "denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula." However, the two sides have since differed on the interpretation of this formula.

"Sometimes you have to leave and this is one of them," Trump told a news conference before leaving Hanoi. He said talks had stalled over the economic sanctions imposed on North Korea over its nuclear and ballistic programs.

"They really want to lift the sanctions in full and that's something we can not do," Trump said.

But at a rare press conference, North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho said in remarks from the North Korean delegation in Hanoi on Thursday night that his country had offered a "realistic proposal" to the Americans and asked for a "partial" lifting of the sanctions.

He stressed that his country has offered to dismantle the Yongbyon nuclear complex in return for partial lifting of the economic sanctions imposed on his country.
