US, South Korea stop "disturbing maneuvers"

The United States and South Korea intend to "stop" their annual joint military exercises as US President Donald Trump continues his efforts to improve ties with North Korea, a US official said Friday.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, came two days after a summit between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Hanoi did not result in any deal.

The NBC News website earlier quoted US military officials as saying that the Fall Eagle military exercises, usually held in the spring, had been postponed.

The joint military exercises organized by the two allies regularly raise the anger of Pyongyang, which sees it as a threat.
In the past, 200,000 South Korean troops and about 30,000 US troops were participating in the Fall Eagle and K-Risulf joint military exercises.

But since the first Trump-Kim Summit in Singapore in June, the United States and South Korea have reduced or canceled several joint military exercises, and American bombers are no longer flying over South Korea.

The president has repeatedly complained about the cost of the exercises.
