Kirius beats Zverev to win the Acapulco tennis tournament

Australia's Nick Kiriris made a surprise 6-2 6-4 victory over second-seeded Alexander Zverev to win the Acapulco International Tennis Tournament in Mexico last night, making his fifth career title.
The astounding Australian player, whose superb journey to the final beat Stanislas Wawrinka and Rafael Nadal, was free and focused from the start, and Zverev was frustrated with a series of shots that landed directly in front of the net.

The former world number 13, who dropped to 72 in the rankings, took advantage of three of his break points and his victory at the first point of the tournament with a huge shot that Zverev, the world number three, could not handle.

Kirios first attacked and broke Zvezerev without losing a point in the fourth game of the opening set and then advanced 4-1, making Zverev frustrated to break his racket on the pitch.

The 23-year-old Australian opened the second set by breaking his German opponent but seemed to begin to collapse when he made a double mistake in the next half to allow Zverev to equalize the score 1-1.

But Kirius maintained his cohesion and broke Zvirev's lead in the fifth half on his way to winning the first championship since Brisbane in January 2018.

Zverev, who was only in his second tournament this year after leaving the fourth round of Australia, reached the final after a strong performance as he did not lose any group throughout the week but failed to keep up with Kirius.
