Facebook sued for "fake accounts"

Facebook said it filed a lawsuit with Instagram in a US federal court against four companies and three people in the People's Republic of China for promoting the sale of counterfeit accounts.
The company said in a publication on the blog that the accused persons and companies promoted the sale of accounts on Facebook and Instagram and other online service companies, such as Amazon, Apple, Google, LinkedIn and Twitter.

The publication did not disclose the names or characteristics of the accused persons.

Last year, Facebook acknowledged that tens of millions of active accounts were fake, pointing out that it was campaigning to track and remove those accounts.

The company estimated that about 3 to 4 percent of the active Facebook accounts on the site were counterfeit, ie nearly 43 million accounts.
