Iranian President Hassan Rowhani on Wednesday rejected the resignation of Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, according to the government website.
"I think your resignation is against the interests of the country and we do not agree with it," Rouhani wrote in a letter to Zarif.

The Iranian foreign minister has announced his resignation, published in the application of "Instagram" on Monday.

"I apologize to you for all the shortcomings of the past years during the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs, and I thank the Iranian nation and the officials," Zarif said.

Sources close to the minister said the resignation came in protest against Zarif not being informed of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's visit to Tehran on Sunday.

 On Monday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo described in a tweet on Twitter, Iran's outgoing foreign minister and Iranian president, as "encounters of a corrupt religious mafia."

The rift in the Iranian administration is one of the consequences of the US sanctions, with growing popular anger and mass demonstrations throughout the country calling for the overthrow of the entire mullahs' regime, whose policies have caused people to suffer because of wasting wealth on the agency's wars in the region and developing banned nuclear and ballistic missiles.
