"New victims" of the campaign of arrests in Turkey
As part of its campaign to arrest anyone suspected of being linked to Fathullah Gulen, the Turkish authorities on Monday issued arrest warrants for 100 soldiers.
The General Office in the capital Ankara, the arrest warrants include 100 soldiers from the ground force, including 43 lieutenant, and 50 sergeant, along with one civilian working in the Ministry of Commerce, according to Agence France-Presse.
Other arrest warrants were issued against nine people working in the Ministry of Health and hospitals, including eight who were arrested.
All of them are suspected of being linked to Gulen, who has been living in the United States for nearly 20 years, and Ankara accuses him of masterminding the failed coup attempt in July 2016. Gulen denies involvement.
The Turkish authorities accuse Gulen of creating a "parallel state" in Turkish institutions to overthrow the government, while he says he runs a "peaceful network" of NGOs and schools.
The authorities are relentlessly chasing his supporters in an unprecedented campaign of arrests in the country's recent history. Some 55,000 people have been suspended and 140,000 have been dismissed or suspended since the coup attempt, drawing international criticism.
